Most women at some point in life will go straight to cutting carbs when trying to lose weight. We get many questions about using plans ketogenic diet to avoid carbs altogether or the old Aitken diet of all fat and protein. Before you do we want to shed some light on what happens to your body when you cut carbs.
Firstly, it’s nearly impossible to cut carbs completely as most of us think of carbs as pasta and bread but forget there are carbs in vegetables, nuts and fruit just to mention some. Not only are these great forms of carbs but they also contain necessary vitamins, minerals and fibre. Eating too few carbs can also mean you’re getting too few probiotics and fibre for gut health.
But I hear you say ‘I’ve always been told cutting carbs is good’. Yes reducing refined carbs such as white bread, pasta and 2 minute noodles is a great thing.
Good carbs from vegetables, fruit, nuts and other sources are important for energy, nutrients and fibre, the very lowest you should ever go is 20 grams of carbs a day. Less than that will cause your body to go into ketosis which can make you feel nauseous, weak and generally lousy.”
So what’t the effects of low carb you ask?
Your muscles and brain utilise carbs to gain energy they need. Your brain burns through close to 500 calories worth of carbs a day, so if you’re cutting carbs to the bare bones you’re going to feel it, and it’s not going to be pretty.
Its hard to focus and feel energised if your brain is going at half speed.
2. MOOD SWINGS AND IRRITABILITY
Your blood sugar levels drop without carbs and because they help support a mood balancing chemical called serotonin you or your partner may find you’re more susceptible to mood swings. No-one needs that!
Carbs are the only food source that contains fibre. Fibre helps to control blood glucose levels, may help lower cholesterol, and promotes bowel regularity.
Avoiding good carbs in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, can cause constipation. Seriously unpleasant.
4. BAD BREATH
When your body is lacking carbs it starts burning fat but also produces ketones which cause your breath to have a foul sour fruit smell!
Why is this important? If the above have not determined why avoiding carbs is not advised. They are also very important for women in helping with good thyroid health. In other words don’t go no carb but avoid the white bread and pizza and go for the rice and vegetables instead.
