With Summer now in full swing the days and evenings are getting noticeably longer and warmer, and with that, we start to think about the great Australian past time of firing up the BBQ and have a few friends and family over for dinner.
What is it you like best about a BBQ? Is it the smell or the sound of meat cooking over a fire? For me, you just can’t beat the smell! I love the way it wafts around the neighbourhood letting everyone know that your cooking delicious BBQ food.
It’s just a shame that BBQ’in can be full of unnecessary fats and even too much sugar. Wouldn’t it be good if you could have a BBQ while you’re trying to lose weight and not worry about all that guilt?
Well, I’ll show you some smart food swaps so you can still enjoy yourself and not feel as though all your hard work of dieting has gone to waste. The secret is knowing where those fats and sugars are hiding and what you can swap them out with.
Sauces and Toppings
This is where a bulk of the calories can hide; the trick is to watch how much you are using and not to get to Gung-Ho when squirting that bottle. Remember its just a topping, not the main course.
How good are a few Snags on the Barbie? Although certain sausages are much higher in fat and even higher again in calories than others.
Kangaroo Sausages are leaner, taste great and could be a better option when you’re thinking about weight loss.
Still, want Pork sausage? How about only having 1 and then having 2 or 3 Kangaroo Sausages to fill you up?
This is another area where the fat is hiding, however, what is an Aussie Hot Dog without cheese? Just remember to limit how much you use and take a closer look at what types you use.
Belinda’s Tasty Aussie Sausage on a roll
*4 Long multigrain bread roll
*4 Sausages (8 kangaroo sausages)
*1 Onion sliced
*1-2 tablespoons of sauces of your choice
*1 handful cheese (grated)
1/ Fire up the BBQ and heat the cooking surfaces and spray with cooking oil.
2/ Add sausages and poke with a fork approx, 3 times on each side.
3/ Cook approx 8 minutes turning on all 4 sides as you go.
4/ Add onion to the hot plate and cook for 4 minutes.
5/ Cut bread rolls lengthways in half, but not all the way through.
6/ Place the BBQed sausages into the multigrain bread rolls.
7/ Top with onion and sauce and sprinkle with cheese.
