Collagen is all the rage in the health and wellness industry. It’s got a range of benefits for skin, hair and nails, and is commonly used as an ingredient in weight loss shakes, including The Lady Shake! It’s well known for its anti-ageing properties, but there’s so much more to it, so let’s break it down!
What Is Collagen?
We’ll start with the basics! Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, it’s the building block for our hair, skin and nails. It’s also the foundation for our bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments! It’s much more than just a beauty product.
Collagen contributes significantly to the quality of our skin and overall health. The thing is though, our bodies stop producing this beloved protein once we reach our mid-20s! And as we get older, it continues to decline. This depletion of collagen stores steals our youthful glow, we’re no longer producing the magical ingredient that provides our skin with bounce and elasticity. Aside from fine lines and wrinkles that develop from the lack of collagen production, our joints won’t be so youthful either.
Once we hit 40, our collagen levels rapidly decline, leading to more visible signs of ageing and joint stiffness. So, if collagen production leads to a reduction in fine lines and supports our joint, ligament and tendon health, why wouldn’t we want to replenish its stores?
Marine Collagen Vs Bovine Collagen
There are a few different kinds of collagen out there, but the two most spoken about are marine and bovine. Marine collagen is derived from the connective tissues, scales or skin of the fish. Whereas bovine collagen comes from the cow, usually from their bones.
Both types of collagen share similar benefits for both skin quality and overall health but bovine collagen is particularly beneficial for supporting muscle recovery and joint health.
Why Put It In A Weight Loss Shake?
From what you’ve read so far, it’s probably pretty self-explanatory, but let’s dive in a little deeper!
Collagen is an essential protein, our bodies need it for optimal health. We put it in our shakes for many reasons! Think about it, our shakes are specifically formulated for weight loss, and if we lose weight rapidly, what happens to our skin? It sags! Since collagen has properties to promote skin health, the addition of this protein may help to reduce loose skin post-weight loss.
When on a weight loss journey, you’re bound to be exercising. And with increased physical activity may come a little bit of pain in your muscles and joints. Collagen may contribute to muscle recovery and strength as well as reduce joint stiffness and discomfort.
To maintain healthy skin, nails, hair, muscles and joints, you should be adding more collagen to your diet, and if you’re already on The Lady Shake, you’re doing your part to bring back that pep in your step! And glow to your skin.
