How To Combat Boredom-Eating

Boredom-eating is one of the sneakiest weight loss derailers! When boredom strikes, our tastebuds can become demanding. So, why does this happen? Well, eating can provide a temporary distraction for our brain, keeping it stimulated. Research suggests that boredom may lead to increased activity in the brain associated with reward and pleasure. So, we’re even more inclined to reach for sugary snacks when our brain is lacking stimulation.

First Steps

Identify if you are hungry or just plain bored! Your tummy is pretty good at signalling when it’s time to eat, so before you dive into snacking, pause and ask yourself if you’re actually hungry or just seeking distraction. 

Effective Distractions

Once you’ve recognised you’re only eating because you're bored, engage in activities that stimulate the mind. The key is to keep your mind occupied, so do things such as reading a book, going for a walk, or practising a hobby. Redirecting your focus away from food will reduce the temptation to eat out of boredom.

Practice Mindful Eating

Another helpful strategy is to practice mindful eating. Rather than mindlessly reaching for snacks, figure out if you’re actually hungry, and if you are, choose nutritious foods that will satisfy both your physical and emotional needs. Aim for snacks that are high in protein and fibre, such as fruits, vegetables and nuts. These kinds of foods will also tie you over for longer!   

Cleanse The Cupboard

If you’re on a weight loss journey then we recommend getting rid of all of your unhealthy snacks. As long as they’re there, they’re just asking to be eaten. Assess your weight loss goals and if snacks are an absolute no-no in your plan, then your best bet is to kick them out of the house. 

 

Combating boredom-eating can be tricky, but once mastered, you’ll find you’ve created an environment where you’re more likely to stick to your weight loss goals and foster healthier eating habits in the long run!
