5 Foods To Avoid Before Bed

Food - general

Share

Eating before bed not only negatively impacts your sleep, but could also hinder your weight loss journey! When we eat before bed, the food sits in our stomach making it harder to fall asleep, and the food that’s sitting there stores as fat since it’s not required for energy!

Most of us love a cheeky little late-night snack, so if you must have your treat, try to avoid these five foods to ensure a peaceful rest.

Chocolate

Chocolate is a go-to for late-night-snacking! But this sweet treat contains caffeine, which stimulates your nervous system, keeping you awake.

For those trying to lose weight, dark chocolate is the go-to snack as it’s lower in sugar and rich in antioxidants, which is great! Except dark chocolate contains more caffeine than milk or white chocolate, so save it for an afternoon pick-me-up

Cheeseburgers

A cheeseburger is one of the most popular cheat meals, but not great for sleep.

Cheeseburgers contain an excessive amount of fat which can block your blood flow, in turn, hindering your ability to fall asleep! The fat also won’t be converted to energy, so your body will store it.

Dried Fruit

Fresh fruit is a great option for a late-night snack, but dried fruit is high in sugar and fibre, both of which can lead to a night of restless sleep.

Fibre tends to leave us gassy and bloated too, which is the last thing you want before bed!

Chips

Another favourite late-night snack is chips, and although tasty, psychological studies have shown that greasy foods such as chips can actually cause nightmares.

Avoiding chips will help keep the bad dreams at bay!

Cereal

Most packaged cereals should really be stocked in the junk food aisle. They’re full of sugar, which like caffeine, stimulates the nervous system, leaving you alert and keeping you awake.
