Eating at a restaurant while you’re trying to lose weight can be daunting. You want to enjoy your time out, but you don’t want to derail all your hard work!

There are almost always a few healthy food options on the menu, and following these four tips are bound to keep you on track.

Keep It Bright

Funnily enough, studies have found that people who eat in places with brighter lights are more likely to order healthier meals than those who dine in restaurants with dim lighting. The reason behind this is we are paying more attention to what we order when we can see clearly! So, aim to dine in restaurants where the lights shine brighter.

Avoid The Bread

We all love an entrée before digging into the main meal but try to avoid the buttery and oily bread starters. Research has shown that people who start with protein-based appetisers such as prawn cocktails or olives typically consume 16% fewer calories in their entrees and mains than those who dig into the buttered bread.

Bag It Up

Dining out can be expensive, so most of us are likely to finish the meal based on cost alone, but you don’t have to eat it all in one sitting! You can ask for a doggy bag to take the leftovers home. That way you’re not wasting any food or stretching the waistline.

Don’t Trust Every Salad

Salads are a common choice for those on a diet, but not every salad is healthy! For example, a typical Caesar salad comes in at over 400 calories and contains a lot of fat, including the bad saturated fat! And a lot of sodium.

Aim to order a leafy green salad with light dressings, you’ll feel better and won’t suffer from the dreaded bloat.
